Incubation in Internet Business
By Cathie Mcginn of Geekdom
Why is innovation so vital? There’s already plenty of expansion to be found in today’s online market. Why is it so important to provide an environment where tiny ideas can grow into great big online successes? Well, when you look into the history of every great new invention or concept ever developed, you often find the innovator was ridiculed, overlooked or flat out ignored by management or investors. The simple fact is that change is challenging, and accepting new ideas means having to let go of the old ones. Look at the internet: it was developed for military communication; the original concept couldn’t have been further from the World Wide Web we all know and love. And it would never have developed in this unexpected direction except for a few innovative people who got passionate about it, got behind it, insisted they could see a bigger picture and were willing to fight to make it a reality. But of course, no one ever got rich from the internet...right? You can’t expect the unexpected or predict the unpredictable, but you can create a space where you can capitalize on it when it happens. How? By creating an environment where talent can grow, pioneering people can realize their potential, and pipe dreams can develop into something real, tangible and – let’s face it – something you can make money from. You can’t blame your under-resourced, overworked manager for sighing a big sigh when you come to her with your latest awesome idea. How are ordinary mortals with deadlines to meet and targets to hit going to know if an employee toiling away on a promising project is the next big thing or a a waste of your valuable time? The fact is, not every entrepreneur can become the next dot com billionaire. Even the most switched on ideas people, despite their brains, drive, and sincerity, aren’t focused on the right thing for the market. It's not about being able to predict the future, but it is about being ready to listen, keeping an ear to the ground and an open mind. Success in innovation is usually due to great collaboration. You hear lots of stories about one lone genius having a ‘eureka!’ moment, but when it comes to consolidating and capitalizing on that vision, it’s all about teamwork. We believe every single person in the organization is critical to our business success – not just the official innovators. This kind of collaborative innovation doesn’t happen by accident; it happens because you plan it that way. Empower your managers to encourage new ideas, create a team vibe that is ready to back one another up and ensure the whole organization has a simple central belief: that innovation is everyone’s job. Encourage your employees to come to work thinking “Is there a better way to do everything we do around here? How can we improve on our products and services?” It’s this mindset that makes people excited about sharing new ideas, and reinforcing the idea that you only win as an organization when everyone’s brain is engaged and work becomes a fun place to be.
